Desert Willow Elementary and Ocotillo Elementary were built to each replace two smaller existing schools. They were the first two schools using the prototype elementary school designed by NCA Architects for Carlsbad Municipal School District.
Lighting design was done by NCA Architects, in association with Schroeder Sales, Inc. The basis of the design was to use simple geometrics, way-finding color and good lighting based on (at that time) relatively new LED lighting technologies.
Both schools welcomed students at the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year.
